H2GO! – Capwater Kid

Jacob McKenney, Designer & Artist, Senior

This is a model for the player character of a class game project titled, “H2GO!”. I was challenged by my professor to design and create a simple character for low poly modeling in a program called Asset Forge. This was very tricky to do, as the program didn’t allow much more than basic primitive shapes, but working with these constraints pushed me to make a clean and simple, yet appealing character design. In the game, the kid collects water in the cup that is balancing on his baseball cap.

H2Go! Cooler Robot

Jacob McKenney, Designer & Artist, Senior

This is a model for the player character of a class game project titled, “H2GO!”. In the end, this character design was not used for the final version of the project. I was challenged by my professor to design and create a simple character for low poly modeling in a program called Asset Forge. This was very tricky to do, as the program didn’t allow much more than basic primitive shapes, but working with these constraints pushed me to make an interesting character design and model. In the game, he would have collected water in the top container of his head, and would have had the ability to pour water from his nose.

Starship 3D Model

Isaac Young, 3D Modeling, Texturing and Animating

This work was heavily inspired by modern fighter jets, however I wanted the weaponry to be futuristic. There are laser cannons in on the jet and the afterburners are a futuristic thruster. I also wanted to make the animation as realistic as possible, I included a pre-flight checks sequence as well as a few combat maneuvers. The flaps, thruster, weaponry and all landing gear are fully animated.

Jacob McKenney, Designer & Artist, Senior

These are stage backgrounds for a university team game project titled, “Metronomium”. This group of stages represent the Hip-hop genre, with it’s sub-genres being, Old School, Lofi, and R&B. The giant clock-like object in each of the backgrounds is a constant reminder of the looming threat of the game’s main villain.

Lazuli

Amaya Phillippi, 3D Artist, Senior

I have been 3D modeling for just over a year now. This was a step out of my usual style to test out working on dramatic stylized characters. I am looking to work as a character designer and believe having diverse 2D and 3D skills is very useful.

Robot Cat 3D Model

Cailey Calvagna, 3D Artist, Junior

This was my first complex model made in Maya 3D after spending a semester learning the program. I am interested in working as a 2D artist, but I would also like to learn how to model humanoid characters. I think 3D modeling is also useful for 2D art, as the model can be rotated for different perspective references of things that are complex to draw. Overall, I think this project was a good stepping stone into modeling more organic shapes.

Rat Doll

Isaac Behling, creator, senior

My name is Isaac Behling and I am aspiring to learn how to create 3d models. This was the very first 3d character I have ever made. I want to be able to create props and environments in Maya or unreal and fill them with visually interesting characters or props.

Bloody Witch

Ian Behling, leader, Senior

My work is a Evil Witch who takes the skin of her victims in order to hide her true skin. my goal is to be able to make my own games so being able to design and create a character is important.

F15H – 3D Modeled Robot

Sawyer Reid, creator; 2023

While I’m not sure what I want to do with my future, I do know for a fact that having an understanding of 3D modeling under my belt will prove to be extremely useful down the line no matter what field I end up in.

Mandalorian Robot

Josh Heiman; 3D Modeler; Junior

This work is one of my first 3D character models made in Maya and took over 60 hours to create. Throughout the process I learned a lot from the mistakes I made especially when it comes to perfecting geometry and thinking about moving parts ahead of time so the model is easier to animate. This model represents a big milestone for myself since I want to go into the 3D Modeling field for games and as I progress through different models I am noticing my skills advance to the point where my career goals start to become a reality.

Low-Poly Forest Assets

Josh Heiman; 3D Modeler; Junior

This work was one of my first project I did in Maya. This project started off with the universal idea of low-poly trees and evolved to the entire forest assets that are basically ready to be implemented into a game. This project taught me the common tools used in Maya like the extrude tool for modeling and the inverse selection that I have found helpful for painting two tone objects in Maya. These tools are fundamental to 3D Modeling and are major components used for efficient project outcomes in the game development process.

THANKS FOR VIEWING

Thanks to our Sponsors and the College of Arts and Communication for supporting our

MAGD Expo 2024

We hold multiple game jams a year where students across the program collaborate in 48 hour sessions to complete mini projects.

Students earn credit with our Game Jams course held multiple times a semester.

Students design their own senior projects. Kalei shows her UI/UX design to Dean Hayes.

Our students can gain experience making games in virtual reality.

Our students also gain experience creating games for alternative controls. Luke and Nicole are showing off their mid-air haptic feedback rhythm game.

Motion capture can bring your VR, AR, Motion Graphic to life. We have a new suit- and marker-based system.

Our annual summer camp brings in future students from 8th grade to seniors in high school to campus for a week of game development.

Nathan creates sound and audio for games. Courses in electronic music help make that happen.

Students can bring their own drawing tablets or check out equipment for their use.
